Resistograph Testing

The Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) method, when undertaken by a qualified Consulting Arborist can identify defects, damage and potential risks in a tree due to observing the outer manifestations of these defects. This widely used method however is unable to accurately define the internal extent of any defect, decay or structural weakness.

The most reliable method for identifying the extent of defects and decay internally is by use of Resistograph testing by a trained, qualified and certified Consulting Arborist. The resistograph is a scientifically calibrated apparatus that measures the resistance of a 3mm probe passing through the trunk of the tree or tree roots. The resistance is plotted graphically and electronically  provides detailed information regarding:

  • The presence and extent of decay in a tree,
  • Hollows or major internal defects,
  • Thickness of structural walls within the trunk,
  • Tree Stability,
  • Annual rings.

Birds Tree Consultancy have been trained and certified in the use of the latest technology Resistograph and are able to produce detailed reports outlining the stability, integrity and internal structure of your trees.
